Stansted, 20th July 2009, Radisson SAS Hotel London Stansted Airport Awarded Gold by the Green Tourism Business Scheme

This month Radisson SAS Hotel London Stansted Airport has been awarded the GOLD rating by the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS).

GTBS is the national sustainable certification scheme for the UK and is the only certification scheme validated by Visit Britain through the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT).

GTBS is the UK's leading sustainable tourism certification scheme which recognises and rates hotels and tourism businesses demonstrating high levels of commitment in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable tourism with bronze, silver and gold awards.

In order to get the GOLD rating, the hotel had to show the efforts it made to be environmentally aware.  Judges visited the hotel to assess the ways in which the hotel is responsible and agreed to pass the prestigious GOLD level of the GTBS.

"We are delighted to win this award. This is fantastic recognition for the hard work our team puts in to being a responsible and green business", remarks Jens Hallman, General Manager. "The nature of our location means we are particularly under scrutiny to reduce our impact on the environment, and with over 200,000 guests passing through our doors every year, this is no easy task. We are very proud to accept this certification and will continue to work hard to be recognised as an industry leader in environmental management."

As part of a company wide Responsible Business programme, the Radisson SAS at Stansted works particularly hard on counter balancing its carbon footprint. The Hotel enforces a Responsible Business programme passionately by making a conscious decision in favour of the environment and social issues, not just in the hotel business life but also privately too.

Some of the ways in which Radisson SAS Hotel London Stansted Airport is responsible include:

  • Low energy lighting installed throughout the hotel and external lighting and signage fitted with light sensors.
  • Flow restrictors have been fitted to all showers and taps, saving six litres of water per minute.
  • E-Cube installed to 54 refrigeration units, ensuring huge savings on energy consumption.
  • Active quarterly "Green meetings" attended by hotel staff.
  • Towel & Linen recycling Programme.
  • Introduction of organic and fair trade teas and coffees.
