New Theatre Cardiff

Discover the best of Welsh drama on stage at the New Theatre Cardiff. Opened in 1906, the New Theatre has been a cornerstone in Welsh theatre for more than a century.

A hundred years later, the New Theatre is still celebrated for being a hub for the arts in Cardiff. Its programme includes touring companies of ballet, drama and music, drawing in both local and international performers year round.

The History of New Theatre
The iconic brick and bath stone New Theatre is in the heart of Cardiff and on completion in 1906 was the largest of its kind in the country.

The first public performance took place on the theatre's opening night, the 10th December and was a production of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night by the company of Mr Herbert Berrbohm Tree. This was followed by a pantomime production of Little Red Riding Hood.

In 1931, structural alterations also allowed New Theatre to be used as a picture house, the last major renovation for many years. In 2006, to mark New Theatre's centenary in Cardiff a major refurbishment of the building exterior took place.
