Belfast Castle

Make your way up to Belfast Castle and you’ll be rewarded with one of the best views of the city. Standing 400 feet above the sea at Cavehill Country Park, it’s one of Belfast’s most treasured buildings.

Belfast Castle is a slight detour from the city centre and Belfast’s best hotels, but well worth the effort.

Arts, culture and history in Belfast
Belfast Castle was built from 1811–70 by the 3rd Marquess of Donegal to replace the 12th century original which has burned down. Built from sandstone, it’s a great example of the Scottish baronial style of architecture which was hugely fashionable at the time.

As well as its undeniably impressive exterior, Belfast Castle’s interiors have been lovingly restored with authentic period features. Visitors can wonder around the extensive estate, take its endless turrets, dine at the atmospheric Cellar Restaurant or enjoy live music at the Castle Tavern.

This all makes Belfast Castle one of the most sought-after, romantic wedding venues in the city, as well as a popular attraction for tourists.

Visitors looking to sample more of Belfast’s rich history and cultural scene can look forward to seeing the impressive Ulster Museum, take in a show at Waterfront Hall or admire architectural wonders like the iconic City Hall building.
